Muscle Strength Testing/Manual Muscle Testing
Generally – place the joint in a postion in which the muscle to be tested has its greatest advantage and have the patient hold this position apply pressure and have the patient hold the position against resistance. Compare both sides (asymmetry’s may be important to note).
Grading of muscle strength:
Several systems available:
eg
0 (zero) – no evidence of muscle contraction
1 (trace) – presence of minimal contraction, but no movement against gravity
2 (mediocre) – full range of movement without gravity
3 (fair) – full range of movement against gravity
4 (good) – full range of movement against gravity with a particular resistance
5 (normal) – full range of motion against gravity and normal resistance
