Muscle Strength Testing/Manual Muscle Testing

Generally – place the joint in a postion in which the muscle to be tested has its greatest advantage and have the patient hold this position  apply pressure and have the patient hold the position against resistance. Compare both sides (asymmetry’s may be important to note).

Grading of muscle strength:
Several systems available:
eg
0 (zero) – no evidence of muscle contraction
1 (trace) – presence of minimal contraction, but no movement against gravity
2 (mediocre) – full range of movement without gravity
3 (fair) – full range of movement against gravity
4 (good) – full range of movement against gravity with a particular resistance
5 (normal) – full range of motion against gravity and normal resistance
