• patient supine or sitting
• stabilise the metatarsals and maintain foot and ankle in neutral position.
• test flexion of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th digits by having patient plantarflex toes against a dorsiflexory force applied against the plantar surface of the proximal phalanx
