Neurology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. This includes conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles. A wide range of neurological conditions affect the feet or can start in the feet, so podiatrists need to know about them. A large number of patients seen in podiatry clinics have neurological problems that may not be related to their foot problem, but may affect how the podiatrist treats the foot problem and interacts with the person, so they need to know about these neurological problems.
The word ‘neurology’ comes from ancient Greek word of νεῦρον (neûron), meaning “string, nerve”.
