Motor Neuron Disease
Diseases that cause loss of upper and/or lower motor neuron functions (mostly weakness and muscle wasting).
Classification:
1) Upper motor neuron diseases:
primary lateral sclerosis
spastic paresis
spastic paraplegia
2) Combined upper and lower motor neuron disease:
• amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
3) Lower motor neuron disease:
• spinal muscular atrophies
• x-linked spinobulbar muscular atrophy
• poliomyelitis
Can be assessed using the Foot Tapping Test.
