Direct acting cholinergic receptor agonists

Bind to muscarinic receptors  cause activation – same response as parasympathetic nervous system

Traditionally divided into two groups:
Esters (eg bethanechol; carbachol; methacholine)
Alkaloids (eg arecoline; muscarine; pilocarpine)
