Laboratory tests are valuable in diagnosis and treatment – but are usually more informative than diagnostic, so need to be used in conjunction with history and physical.

Rising cost of heathcare raises questions about necessity of many laboratory tests  need strategies to optimise use of the tests. Indiscriminate use of laboratory tests  inconvenience to patient and increases cost of care.

Only form of communication for requesting a test  accuracy essential. Used to request specific test(s) and includes patient information (name, ID number, date of birth, clinicians name)
