Cohort studies:
• These are studies of a single group without the disease – they are then classified as being exposed or not exposed to a potential cause of the disease
• eg
• The cohort is followed in time to compare the incidence of disease or variable under study between the two groups
• Difficult to use for rare diseases
• It is possible to distinguish causes from associated factors – bias may influence the outcome measure
• can be used to determine the incidence of a disease or outcome
• prospective nature allows better ability to monitor and control measurement of variables
