Prophylactic use of antibiotics in surgery
Can decrease risk of infection in some types of surgery.
Indicated:
• when risk of infection is high (eg large bowel surgery)
• organ is susceptible (eg diseased heart valves)
• patient is susceptible (eg neutropenic)
