Antimicrobial Therapy/Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to eradicate cells (organisms or neo-plastic)
(Antibacterial/antiviral/antifungal/antiprotozoal/antihelminthic)
Can be: bacteriostatic (arrest bacterial growth)
bactericidal (kill bacteria)
Attempt to selectively affect the biochemical processes of the microorganisms without affecting the host’s tissues
Generally act by affecting:
• cell wall (eg penicillins)
• cytoplasmic membrane
• protein synthesis (eg tetracyclines)
• nucleic acid metabolism
