Antimicrobial Therapy/Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to eradicate cells (organisms or neo-plastic)

(Antibacterial/antiviral/antifungal/antiprotozoal/antihelminthic)

Can be: bacteriostatic (arrest bacterial growth)
bactericidal (kill bacteria)

Attempt to selectively affect the biochemical processes of the microorganisms without affecting the host’s tissues

Generally act by affecting:
• cell wall (eg penicillins)
• cytoplasmic membrane
• protein synthesis (eg tetracyclines)
