Specific gravity:
Indicates the proportion of dissolved solid components to water – measures the kidney’s ability to concentrate urine. Normally 1.003-1.035. Concentrated urine has a higher specific gravity. Increased in diabetes mellitus and volume depletion (eg diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration). Decreased in diabetes insipidus.
