Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) – often used for prophylactic control of blood clotting; blocks formation of thromboxane A2 from arachidonic acid prevents platelets from adhereing to each other and to atheromatous plaques. Used for primary prevention of myocardial infarction and prevention of reinfarction and prevention of strokes in those with a history of transient ischaemic attacks.
