Used to assess function and status of urinary tract as well as a number of metabolic processes.
Four basic collection procedures – first morning specimen (for routine analysis and for identifying orthostatic proteinuria), random specimen (for routine analysis), fractional specimen (collected at the same time as blood for comparison with serum levels) and the timed specimen (for quantitative analysis of specific component – usually over a 24 hr period).

Midstream sample is indicated if infections suspected, so it is not contaminated with bacteria and secretions of skin that surround urethra.
