Abbreviations are the shortened forms of words or phrases that are used to represent the full form in a more concise and convenient manner. They are commonly used in podiatry clinical practice. The abbreviations are usually created by taking the initial letters or syllables of a word or phrase and combining them into a shorter form. The purpose of podiatry abbreviations are to help save time, space and effort when writing or speaking.

The are four general types of abbreviations:
Acronyms: Acronyms are abbreviations formed by combining the initial letters of a series of words to create a pronounceable word. For example, APodA stands for the Australian Podiatry Association
Initialisms: Initialisms are similar to acronyms, but the letters are pronounced individually rather than forming a word. For example, TbCo stands for tincture of compound of benzion (Friars Balsam).
Contractions: Contractions are abbreviations that involve omitting one or more letters from a word. For example, “can’t” is a contraction of “cannot,” and “it’s” is a contraction of “it is” or “it has.”
Shortenings: Shortenings are abbreviations that truncate a word without following a specific pattern. For example, “info” is a shortening of “information”.
