Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis:
Inflammatory complication of diverticulosis.
Thought to result from stagnation of faecal material in a single diverticulum.
Clinical features – abdominal pain (usually lower left quadrant); fever; leukocytosis; may have constipation or loose stools, nausea and vomiting
Management – resolution common if mild  limited physical activity; reduced fluid intake; antibiotics; short term low fibre diet
If severe  may have signs of systemic infection  hospitalisation
