The Running Shoe Book by Peter R Cavanagh from 1980 discusses the biomechanics of running as well as the history, construction, manufacture, and criteria for choosing and determining the fit and comfort of running shoes. It certainly was a classic and still worth having a copy for running shoe geeks. The book has some availability in the second-hand marketplace.

About the author of The Running Shoe Book:
Peter R Cavanagh, PhD was born, raised, and educated in England. He graduated Loughborough College (1969), and did graduate studies in human biomechanics at the Royal Free Medical School at the University of London (1972). He has held faculty positions at Penn State University and The Cleveland Clinic. He is currently the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He is a past President of both the American Society of Biomechanics and the International Society of Biomechanics, and has received the Borelli Award and Muybridge Medal from these societies. He has also been the recipient of the International Diabetic Foot Award, the Edward J. Olmos Award for Amputation prevention, The Dyson Award, and the Lawrence Young NSBRI Award. His research interests include the modeling of the foot, imaging of the foot muscles in people with diabetic neuropathy, studying the mechanical characteristics of skin, designing optimal footwear for reducing pressure under the foot, and determining the properties of diabetic bone.
