the trend has been towards minimalism and creating lightweight shoes with less cushioning, Hoka One One went a different direction.

lightweight, nimble shoes utilizing an oversized outsole footprint, maximally cushioned midsoles and active meta-rocker technology

Founded by: Jean-Luc Diard and Nicolas Mermoud – two trail-running who previously worked for Salomon – wanted s hoe that allowed him to run downhill faster –> oversize concept born from that

Features of the shoe are the oversize; the foam midsole (~30% softer than traditonal EVA used in running shoe); a rocker in the from half of the sole; and ~50% increase in outsole surface area; ~15% lighter that an typical comparative running shoe (more on the technologies).

still on board; brought out by Deckers Outdoor Corporation in sept 2012 : http://www.pacbiztimes.com/2013/04/05/deckers-makes-run-for-athletes-with-hoka/

Pronounced Ho-kah Oh-nay Oh-nay which means “Time to Fly” in Māori. “The word Hoka is derived from the ancient Maori language and roughly translated to “now it is time to fly“. “
