The Etonic company started in 1876 when Charles A. Eaton opened his shoe company in Brockton, Massachusetts where they mostly manufactured military boots and golf shoes. They started making running shoes during the running boom in the early 1970’s. The current range of technical running shoes was introduced in 2005. Etonic was acquired by Lotto Sport Italia in 2006 and then acquired by a venture capital partnership, Etonic Holdings, LLC in 2012. In a press release announcing this acquisition, Bruce Weisfeld stated:
“We are extremely excited about our acquisition of the worldwide rights to the Etonic Brand. Etonic is truly an authentic American athletic company with products ranging from golf and running to bowling. We plan to restore and reinvigorate Etonic and return the brand to its rightful place among the best athletic companies in the world. Since 1876 Etonic has lead the sporting goods industry with many firsts including the first golf specific shoe last and the first “Gore-Tex” waterproof golf shoe. Etonic is also responsible for having developed a line of running shoes that actually prevented injury. We plan on continuing the Etonic tradition of “firsts” by bringing to market many new developments in each category in the months and years to come. We are confident that this strategy combined with increased market awareness through endorsements, sponsorships and marketing will re-establish Etonic as a leading American heritage sporting goods supplier.”
Etonic Running Shoes:
Etonic classify their running shoes into three technical categories (Neutral, Moderate and Maximum Support) and three ride or cushioning preferences (Performance, Responsive and Plush). They explain this using their Footwear Positioning Matrix.
A revamp and relaunch of the Etonic brand and range was planned for 2014. As at January 2015, the Etonic website had this under ‘running’
Throughout the years Etonic has stayed focused on what really matters to athletes and fitness enthusiasts: Leading-edge technology, enhanced performance and exceptional comfort and fit. Newly developed outsole materials will reduce negative ground impact while providing superior cushioning to the foot. Seamless upper materials have been perfected, offering superior breathability while anatomical, molded heal and ankle padding completes the fit. The next generation of Etonic running is just around the corner. Stay tuned.
Etonic’s Footwear Positioning Matrix:
The horizontal axis addresses Levels of Stability and affords three distinct categories; Neutral Support for runners with a biomechanically correct and efficient gait; Moderate Support for runners with mild to moderate amounts of pronation requiring stability; and Maximum Support for runners with severe pronation that require a high level of motion control in their footwear.
The vertical axis of the Matrix addresses “Cushioning Preference” and creates three distinct levels of midsole performance; Performance Ride for the faster runner or racer with a very efficient gait who prefers the performance benefits provided by lightweight footwear; Responsive Ride for the runner who prefers a quicker more energy efficient response that enhances a faster more efficient gait; and a Plush Cushioned Ride for the runner who needs (or wants) the added protection and comfort provided
by a plush ride helping those who require maximum protection.
