Has a high number of traumatic injuries with an apparent high risk per player hour than other contact sports – with spinal injuries getting a lot of media attention from time to time in some countries. Rules have been changed to reduce the chance of these injuries. Experience, tackling technique and fitness are key factors in reducing the risk. Small number of injuries in lower limb (foot/toe, 2.8%; ankle, 7.1%; leg, 3.6% – Gibbs , 1993); (lower leg, 5.6%; ankle, 10.5%; foot/toes, 3.5% – Bathgate et al , 2002).
