Unlike other field sports, American football has very specialised positions on the team specific conditioning, injury patterns and rehabilitation (including different types of foot orthoses) required for each position. The knee is the most commonly injured structure (medial collateral ligament, meniscus and anterior cruciate). Ankle injuries (especially inversion sprains) and 'turf toe' (sprain of plantar capsular ligament) are common lower limb injuries. 40% of injuries are ‘strains and sprains’, 25% are fractures and 25% are contusions.
