All the statistics on health status in Ethiopia are among the world’s worst due to the poverty, poor parental care and the prevalence of infectious diseases which are facilitated by poor sanitation and malnutrition. These problems are exacerbated by the shortage of trained manpower and health facilities. There is a very low number of health professionals in the country due to the economic conditions and many educated professionals leave to seek higher salaries elsewhere.

The main sports in Ethiopia are football and athletics, especially running and Ethiopian athletes often win major international events. The most well known is the barefoot marathon runner Abebe Bikila who won the gold medals at the Rome and Tokyo Olympics in 1960 and 1964. Haile Gebrselassie won several world championships, 2 Olympic 10 000m gold medals and 4 subsequent Berlin Marathons.
