Wax/Paraffin Footbaths:
Not used much today. Raises temperature of skin and subcutaneous tissues of digits. Paraffin mixed with mineral oil in ratio of 1:6 to decrease melting temperature.
Paraffin is kept at a temperature of 42-50ºC in thermostatically controlled container for lower extremity.
Has been shown that joint capsule can increase up to 7.5ºC and muscle 4.5ºC with paraffin wax treatment .
Use – foot is dipped 6-12 times for several seconds; then wrap in plastic and cover with towel.
Indications – chilblains; joint injury/arthritis affecting small joint s of fingers and toes
Usually immersed for 20 to 30 minutes.
Contraindications – sensory impairment; open wounds; skin lesions.
