Long term use:
• inhibition of normal adrenal function  on withdrawal, may not be able to synthesise endogenous steroids
• hypertension
• sodium and water retention  oedema
• increased risk for diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, depression, paranoia
• Cushing’s syndrome
• growth inhibition in children
• weight gain
• osteoporosis  increased risk for stress fractures and fractures
• thinning of skin
• easy bruising
• attenuated inflammatory response
• increased susceptibility for infection
