Diuretics

Diuretics

Drugs used to increase urine volume/flow and to promote fluid loss (decrease blood volume) – most work by blocking sodium and chloride reabsorption  create osmotic pressure within nephron that prevent the passive reabsorption of water
.
Indicated for – hypertension, oedema from congestive heart failure, glaucoma, prevention of tubular necrosis.

Diuretics cause electrolyte imbalances – especially hypokalaemia (need to be monitored for this).

Three main groups – thiazide diuretics, loop diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics
