C Reactive Protein

C Reactive Protein (CRP):
Nonspecific test for inflammatory process. Present in trace amounts normally – increased amounts can be detected within 6 hours of the onset of an inflammatory reaction. Measured by latex agglutination test or rocket electrophoresis.
Connective tissue disease  mild elevation
Bacterial infections  high elevation
Usually falls when inflammation decreases  can be used to monitor inflammataory process.
