Haemoglobin (Hgb):
To determine amount of haemoglobin in the red blood cells for oxygen transport
Increased  polycythemia, dehydration
Decreased  anaemia, recent blood loss, haemolysis of red blood cells, pregnancy; reduced absorption of iron
Lowest safe level for elective surgery is considered <10gm/100ml
