Hypertension:
More common in those with diabetes; part of metabolic syndrome
• major risk factor for micro- and macro-vascular complications
• in type 1, is usually occurs in conjunction with nephropathy; higher prevalence in type 2 due to close link to insulin resistance; often present for many years prior to diagnosis of type 2  risk factor has been at work for some time damaging tissue
• beta-blockers and high dose thiazides increase insulin resistance; ACE inhibitors can increase insulin sensitivity
• diet and lifestyle modifications have significant impact on blood pressure level
