Acute painful peripheral sensory neuropathy:
Uncommon and transient neuropathy; may follow period of poor glycaemic control, follow initiation of insulin therapy, a sudden normalisation of hyperglycaemia or profound weight loss; pain (sometimes incapacitating) is main feature; pain not related to exercise or activity; symmetrical; motor function and reflexes usually preserved; recovery is usual, but there may be some residual symptoms; management is symptomatic.
