Reverse windlass test

Reverse windlass test:
Tests the integrity of the windlass mechanism of the plantar fascia of each digit.
Windlass effect is greatest in the hallux, with a lesser effect in the lateral digits.

‘Footstool edge weightbearing test’ (Stainsby, 1997):
• when weightbearing with toes over edge of stool, the windlass mechanism plantarflexes the proximal phalanx
• proximal phalanges of all toes should be resistant to dorsiflexion (distal phalanges not affected)
