Birth
Routine examination of newborn babies is an important task used to check growth, conform the infant’s level of maturity, detect any congenital malformations, to recognise any illness and to commence treatment.
APGAR scoring at birth:
• Appearance/colour
• Pulse –
• Grimace – stimulation of plantar surface of foot to provoke crying
• Activity – muscle tone
• Respiratory effort
Each is scored from 0 to 2, with two being the maximum. <6 is considered to indicate a problem.
1 in 33 babies are born with some form of structural abnormality- most mild.
