This started to become a thing in 2022-2023. An increasing number of prominent football players were playing with holes cut or ripped into the back of their socks. This has lead to some confusion and bemusement of fans as to why they would be doing this for.
Currently the practice is not prohibited by rules of the game, though there have been calls for it to be banned.
The alleged claim is that this reduces the constriction of the tight socks might have on those with larger calf muscles and reduce the inhibition that tight socks might have on the circulation. Some claim it can reduce the chance of cramps. There is no evidence of this or if cutting the holes has any benefit or not.
