Ulcer Classification

Ulcers can be classified in a number of ways – can be classified on aetiology, clinical features or histology.

1) Vascular
a) Arterial (eg arterial insufficiency, Thomboangiitis Obliterans, hypertension, chilblains)
b) Venous (eg chronic venous insufficiency)
c) Lymphatic (eg lymphoedema)
2) Neuropathic (eg diabetes mellitus, poliomyelitis, tabes dorsalis, leprosy)
3) Vasculitis (eg rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, Giant cell arteritis, polyarteritis nodosa)
4) Haematologic (eg sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia)
5) Infectious (eg bacterial, leprosy, syphilis)
6) Metabolic (eg diabetes mellitus, gout)
7) Neoplasia (eg basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma,)
8) Miscellaneous (eg burns, frostbite, radiation)
