Achilles tendon repair
Controversy re surgical or conservative repair of achilles tendon rupture.
Acute rupture:
Procedure:
• Prone- medial to tendon (to avoid sural nerve)- above and below tear for 7cm incise parameter sutures in each part tied
Post-op- plantarflexed splint; 10 days post-op- ROM exercises; brace with heel raise; weight bearing at 5 weeks; strengthening at 6-8 weeks; return to sports- 9 months
Complications- re-rupture; infection; sural nerve damage
