Ankle joint replacement
First generation of ankle implants had poor results.
Indications- arthritis (post-traumatic, degenerative, inflammatory, haemophilic); avascular necrosis
Procedure:
Post op- compression dressing; shortly cast at one week; remove cast and sutures at 3 weeks; at 7 weeks, if synostosis fused protected weightbearing with CAM walker for 4 weeks
Indicated for severe ankle arthritis that significantly affects quality of life.
