Osteoporosis in Female Athletes

Amenorrhoea  lower bone mineral density and inadequate formation of bone  bone loss can reach 25% of total bone mass  increased risk for stress fractures and more serious fractures (eg hip).
Following short periods of amenorrhoea, the decrease in bone density is reversible, but after longer periods (several years), the loss may be irreversible  significant risk for osteoporosis in later life.
May be an advantage to take dietary calcium supplements or use hormone replacement therapy. Find Weird and Wonderful Books at AbeBooks
