The Female Athlete
An increasing number of females are participating at the top level of sport. Most problems that happen in sports are no different from males, but there are some specific sports related problems in females.
It was not until 1972 were women officially allowed to compete in the Boston Marathon, after a women illegally entered and completed it in 1967.
Female athletes are under intense pressure (self, coach, peer, public) to have low percentage of body fat to achieve performance levels increased risk for problems.
* Nygaard et al (1996) found a correlation between unanticipated urinary leakage in female athletes and dynamic arch flexibility. They speculated that this was related to the dynamic shock absorption of the lower limb. The impact forces that this may have on the pelvic floor may increase the risk for urinary incontinence in female athletes.
