Mechanism of Sports Injury

Sports injury can occur through a number of mechanisms:

1) Primary:
a) Direct or extrinsic (eg direct blow)
b) Indirect or intrinsic (eg twisting)
c) Overuse
i) Acute repetitive friction (friction between structures eg iliotibial band syndrome)
ii) Chronic repetitive micro-fatigue (eg stress fracture)
2) Secondary
a) Short term (eg previously miss-managed injury)
b) Long term (eg degenerative arthritis)

Most injuries are the result of a set of circumstances, risk factors and pre-existing conditions  chain of events  injury
