Rope skipping is commonly used as an exercise for fitness and also as a competitive sport. A number of studies have shown that jumping rope has benefits for adults and children for cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, agility, coordination as well as bone health. The competitive side of the sport is governed by a number of competing international organizations. The competitions range from speed to artistic and team techniques.
There are many different types of rope jumping techniques, some with variations in foot placement:
Injuries in Skipping Rope:
The rope jump techniques involve repeated collisions between the foot and the ground, which can increase the risk of an overuse injury. Most of the jump rope injuries at home were ankle sprains (Martinez et al, 2011)
Footwear for rope jumping:
Typically the advice is to use a more minimalist shoe with some cushioning and less or no drop. Cross-training or boxing shoes are often recommended.
The Ropix brand of footwear is specially designed for jump rope.
Hai-Bin Yu et al (2022) compared plantar pressures between a running shoe and a jumping shoe when rope jumping and found minimal differences with the plantar pressures lower with the jumping shoe.
