Foot and Ankle Trauma, edited by Denise Mandi is the April 2012 issue of Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and brings together experts in the field of foot and ankle trauma to provide us with the most current treatments and fixation methods available for the management of the traumatic patient. Trauma as it relates to the foot and ankle can range from commonly encountered low-energy fractures to severely deformed and mutilated injuries that can be quite challenging before deciding on an effective treatment plan. Throughout this issue, numerous fractures such as the talus, calcaneus, pilon, and Lisfranc’s injuries are reviewed in detail. In addition, the management of crush injuries and traumatized soft tissue envelope is also discussed in detail. Postoperative algorithms are presented for the treatment of posttraumatic deformities and/or complications.
Despite the numerous advances in the field of foot and ankle trauma, the realistic outcome for certain select injuries may not quite meet the patient’s and surgeon’s expectations. Family counseling and education about the severity and prolonged rehabilitation of the patient’s injury are paramount for the patient’s successful recovery. The guest editor, Dr Denise Mandi, has done an outstanding job with her contributions and invited authors and I thank them for their input in managing these complex foot and ankle injuries.
