Massage/Soft Tissue therapy

Scientific evidence is lacking – does produce feeling of relaxation and feeling of well being. May help reduce scar formation following the acute phase of soft tissue injury and reduce adhesions in chronic soft tissue lesions. Can be useful to reduce muscle spasm. Can assist venous and lymphatic flow and reduction of oedema

Types:
1) Effleurage – rhythmic stroking/flowing – superficial or deep – uses palms of hand and movement is usually in the direction of venous or lymphatic flow (ie distal to proximal); used to decrease tissue oedema ad help with muscle relaxation.
2) Petrissage – compression/deep friction/kneading – used to mobilise skin and connective tissue
3) Percussion/tapotement – tapping/hitting
4) Vibration – shaking of the tissues
5) Friction – deep pressure

Indications:
Soft tissue trauma; after immobilisation of fractures; scars and adhesions; reduction of oedema; relaxation; muscle soreness; muscle spasms

Contraindications:
Acute inflammation; skin lesions; infection; deep vein thrombosis; myositis ossificans; varicose veins; fragile skin; contusions
