Patient adherence with pharmacological interventions

So that some drugs are effective, they need to be taken at regular time intervals for a particular period of time.
Non-adherence/non-compliance is a major problem and reason for many drug failures (achieving desired therapeutic effect)

Estimated:
• up to 5% of all prescriptions are not filled
• 40-50% of patients do not accurately follow instructions

Adequate explanation increases adherence to a course of treatment.

Unused drugs  danger if left lying around.

Education is the responsibility of the clinician and pharmacist (involve family and/or caregiver)
