The World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines is a list that is published by the World Health Organization (WHO) which contains the medicines that are considered to be most effective and safe to meet the most important needs in a health system, listing only the most efficacious, safe and cost–effective medicines for priority conditions. Many countries use the list to develop their own lists of essential medicines. The list was first published in 1977 and included 208 medications. It is updated every two years by the Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines. The 2021 list has 479 medicines listed. In 2007 a separate list for children up to 12 years of age was created.
