Osmotic diuretics

Osmotic diuretics:
• eg mannitol, isosorbide – both are pharmacologically inert
• increase osmotic pressure of the glomerular filtrate  inhibits reabsorption of water and electrolytes in tubular segments (proximal tubule, descending loop of Henle, collecting ducts)
• adverse effects – hyponatraemia, dehydration, circulatory overload (due to increased osmotic pressure)
