For the purposes of drug dosing, children over the age of 12 are usually considered as adults
Pharmacokinetic differences:
Absorption:
• gastric acid output is reduced <2 years, otherwise oral absorption similar to adults
Distribution:
• total body water and extracellular fluid volume as a percent of total bodyweight decreases with age
Doses:
• usually based on milligrams of drug per kilogram of body weight or on surface area expressed as milligrams per square metre
