Classification of drugs/medicines
Drugs that share similar characteristics are usually grouped together as a pharmacological class or family. Drugs can be classified in a different number of ways, depending on the classification system used.
May be classified :
1. Therapeutic use (eg antimicrobials, antihypertensive)
2. Mode or site of action
a) molecular interaction (eg receptor blocker; enzyme inhibitor)
b) cellular site (eg loop diuretic)
c) physiological system (eg vasodilator; anticoagulant)
3. Molecular structure (eg steroid)
