Antinuclear antibodies (ANA’s):
Group of antibodies directed against nuclear components (eg DNA, DNP, RNA). Several tests available – immunofluoresence, immunoassay and immunodiffusions.
Testing indicated when autoimmune disease is suspected (not a good screening test).
Different profiles of ANA’s have been described and correlated to clinical features of diseases.
Present in 95% of systemic lupus erythematosus.
