Mumps/Epidemic parotitis

Mumps/Epidemic parotitis:
Acute viral disease (paramyxovirus)  swelling of the salivary glands.
Transmitted person-to-person contact.
Incubation period of 14 – 20 days.
Common in children between the ages of 2 and 12 years.
Prevented by NMR vaccine.

Clinical features:
Mild fever, malaise, headache, very sore throat, tenderness and painful swelling of the salivary glands (between the ear and jaw). Complications involve swelling of the testicles (males), and abdominal pain (females).

Complications – orchitis; epididymitis; arthritis; encephalitis; deafness; thyroiditis

Treatment – supportive; cold compresses for pain; acetaminophen; liquid or ‘soft’ diet
