Scoliosis

Scoliosis

Common and potentially severe

Lateral curvature of the spine of greater than 10% in the frontal plane. Most common spinal disorder. Prevalence may be as high as 1:200

Two types:
• Structural – congenital, idiopathic or acquired (eg post traumatic, neuromuscular disease, connective tissue disorder)
• Functional – usually due to a malpositioning or a unilateral muscle pull

Evaluation:
PLEAD – Pattern (serpintine, primary, secondary); Location (thoracic, thoracolumbar, lumbar); Etiology (idiopathic, congenital, acquired, functional); Apex (thoracic, lumbar); Direction (left, right)

Usually not painful – often found on routine examination.
