Contraction of the plantarflexor muscles of the toes are believed are believed to help counteract the moments placed on the metatarsals by bodyweight. Sharkey et al (1995) showed that from their in vitro study that muscular fatigue could lead to increase metatarsal strain. In an in vivo study, Arndt et al (2002) showed that increased fatigue in the plantar musculature increased dorsal compression strains in the second metatarsal. This fatigue could play a role in the aetiology of stress fractures of the metatarsals.
