Overuse syndrome at base of second metatarsal
Common in ballet dances – en pointe increases retrograde forces along shaft of second metatarsal.
Thought to be due to a synovitis of the second tarsometatarsal joint.
Clinical features:
Midfoot pain – worse during dancing (especially en pointe and jumps); onset may be gradual or sudden
Differential diagnosis – stress fracture of base of second metatarsal;
Treatment:
Activity modification; avoidance of pointe work;
