Shin splints:
The American Medical Association in 1966 in their ‘Standard Nomenclature of Athletic Injuries’ defined shin splints as ‘pain or discomfort in the leg resulting from repetitive running on hard surfaces, or forcible excessive use of the foot flexors; diagnosis should be limited to musculotendonous inflammations, excluding fracture or ischaemic disorder’. Despite the wide variety of heterogenous conditions and pathologies associated with exercise induced leg pain, this broad ‘waste basket’ term is still widely used by clinicians and in the lay press. The term should be abandoned .
